Post qualifications for dental staff

The dental sedation nurses training programme at Barts Health Dental Hospital is suitable for GDC registered dental nurses who assist with patients receiving treatment under conscious sedation.

The training programme requires candidates to achieve a balanced mixture of knowledge and practical skills as well as demonstrating an appropriate professional attitude. To ensure our dental sedation qualifications reflect the areas of practice the dental nurse works in, the course offers training to enable candidates to complete one of the three options offered by the NEBDN:

  • Certificate in dental sedation nursing (Inhalation and intravenous sedation)
  • Award in inhalation sedation dental nursing
  • Award in intravenous sedation dental nursing

All three qualifications are at the same level. The titles ‘award’ and ‘certificate’ indicate the difference in the number of learning hours required to complete each qualification. Candidates will need to decide at the start of the programme which of the three qualifications is appropriate to their clinical practice.

This course will cover:

  • The learning outcomes specified in the NEBDN Sedation Dental Nursing syllabus, which can be found on the NEBDN website:
  • Our course is designed to run over 13 months to allow each student adequate time to complete all of the clinical competencies to gain entrance to the  NEBDN Sedation Examination. There are dedicated sessions after entry for mock examinations, examination preparation and revision to facilitate our students success.

The start date of this course is January 2020 and July 2020.

Cost: £1,100 (including NEBDN registration & examination).
